The fastest charging electric racing car comes from the Netherlands

Students from Eindhoven University of Technology show a new electric racing car called inMotion. This electric car charges the fastest on the track! At least when you compare it to other long-distance racing cars.

The inMotion team started in November 2022. More than thirty students worked on the car, designing and producing a new battery pack. The EV is not just a school project. The result is the fastest loading race car!

Charge electric car super fast

How quickly does this Dutch racing car charge its battery when you plug it in? The battery pack has a maximum charging capacity of 322 kW. With a capacity of 29.2 kWh, the battery is charged in just 3 minutes and 56 seconds. The range is about 250 kilometers.

Better cooling of the batteries

According to the team, battery degradation is minimal according to a test lasting just 24 hours. Team Manager Julia Niemeijer explains: “In the past we developed an innovative cooling technology where plates filled with coolant were placed between the modules with cells. “If you want to dissipate the heat from the battery pack as well as possible, you should cool as close to the battery cells as possible.”

“We therefore recently developed a method that allows us to cool at the cell level, with coolant actually flowing between the individual cells. This allows us to extract even more heat from the pack. This has an enormously positive effect on the service life and repeated fast charging,” says Niemeijer.

Technology in an LMP3 racing car

The goal of the InMotion team is to make loading as fast as refueling. With a time of under 4 minutes, it’s awfully close. It remains to be seen whether the technology will last in the long term.

The technology was implemented in an LMP3 car. In this racing class, prototypes are driven by young drivers and new teams. The circuit is a kind of stepping stone to the 24 Hours of Le Mans. The most famous 24-hour race is therefore the ultimate dream of the team.
