Underneath these Tron pajamas is the new electric Renault 5

Is this movie reference too old? Because Tron dates back to 1982. We’re referring to the sci-fi spectacle, because the new electric Renault 5 in these photos is covered with what’s called a wire frame, which was used to make primitive computer drawings in the 1980s.

More than two years ago we got acquainted with the upcoming Renault 5. It was presented as a spectacular study model that is clearly reminiscent of the original five and even has elements of the famous Renault 5 Turbo.

Renault 5 looks like a concept car

Are there any differences between the concept car and this production version? Yes, at first glance we see that the door handles are no longer hidden and the door mirrors are now a decent size.

Beyond that, there’s actually little to see in these black-clad Renault 5s. They are amazingly similar to the previously presented study model, but are less thick. It will have to do with the less extreme alloy wheels.

Little details have undoubtedly changed here and there. This is to satisfy the penny counters at Renault and to make things easier for the employees in the production department.

The remaining design elements are the “air grille” on the left side of the bonnet, the slightly flared wheel arches and the square elements in the front bumper. The charging connection at the front left is new compared to the concept.

Construction of pre-series examples

Renault is currently busy building a series of several dozen pre-production examples. They will be tested extensively in the coming months. The Renault 5 will be launched in 2024 – next year.

Another difference from the study model that we just noticed is the light bar on the back of the trunk lid. The last 5 stand for the brand name “Renault”, on the right is the historical type designation “5”.

Why a model from the past?

Why is Renault actually bringing back a model from the past? “Cars are losing some of their character in the transition to electric,” designer Sandeep Bhambra told Autovisie.

“And if there’s one thing older models have in abundance, it’s character. The Renault 5 has been out of production for decades but is still popular. When you come across one, you can’t help but smile.”
