JD Power: “These electric brands make the worst cars”

JD Power: “These electric brands make the worst cars”

Okay, time for nuance. Tesla and Polestar are out of contention for refusing to take part in JD Power’s annual survey. Nevertheless, the consumer organization has responded to the electric models of both brands. And they don’t look good…

JD Power has released its annual Initial Quality Study, which surveys more than 94,000 Americans about their experiences with their new vehicle purchases in 2023.

These electrical brands did not want to cooperate

In order to be able to check certain points, the organization needs the permission of the brands. Tesla, Polestar, Lucid Motors and Rivian Motors don’t want to give it away. We wouldn’t do that if we were them either, as they rank pitifully at the bottom of the rankings. Unofficially though…

No wonder, because they scored dramatically

How well or poorly a brand performs is expressed in terms of problems per 100 cars. Lucid Motors is in the very bottom with 340 problems per 100 cars, slightly ahead of Rivian Motors with 282.

JD Power does not include either of them in the official study because a sufficiently large sample could not be determined. The organization was successful at Tesla and Polestar. Tesla has 257 problems per 100 cars, Polestar even 313. Schwalbe!

Polestar and Volvo are at the bottom of the ranking

The only other car brands doing anywhere near as badly as the four EVs are Volkswagen (249), Chrysler (250) and Volvo (250). Man, what happened to the Swedish quality and indestructibility? Both Volvo and Polestar are at the bottom.

What suddenly happened to Alfa Romeo?

Incidentally, the average in the 2023 first quality study is 192. Three brands are well below this and are therefore at the top. All three come as a bit of a surprise: Dodge (140), Ram (141) and amazingly Alfa Romeo (143). This manufacturer was often the last.

Where have Lexus, Toyota and Subaru gone?

Usually in such surveys, the Japanese are at the top, such as Lexus, Subaru and Toyota. But no, they are currently somewhere near the average. The brands that have improved the most are Italians: Maserati (up 73 points) and Alfa Romeo (68).
