Will this Volvo EX30 be the best selling car of 2024?
There are not that many affordable electric cars. However, this must change in the future. Not only with cars like the Renault 5 or the Volkswagen ID.2, but also in the form of a crossover like the EX30 from Volvo.
Volvo sold more than 615,000 cars last year. While that’s a lot, the company aims to sell 1.2 million models by 2025. The EX30 can play a key role in this, after all the slightly larger XC40 is a success in our country.
Will the Volvo EX30 be the best selling car of 2024?
The Volvo EX30 is more akin to its much larger – and less affordable – electric brother, the EX90, in its design language. The EV is not an extreme design splurge and is immediately recognizable as a Volvo. At least the looks.
Under the skin, the Volvo EX30 is identical to the Smart #1, also a Geely product. Just like the Brabus #1, the AWD-Volvo delivers 428 hp and 543 Nm of torque. This variant with a trailer load of up to 1,600 kilograms. The long range with rear-wheel drive can tow 1,400 kilograms, the entry-level model 1,000 kilograms.
Both the extended range and the cheapest version of the Volvo EX30 have an electric motor with 272 hp and 343 Nm of torque on board. The difference can be found under the floor. The AWD and Long Range have a 69 kWh battery on board. This will get you 460 kilometers further with the AWD and 20 kilometers with the Long Range. The battery that lies in the floor of these cars is a so-called NMC battery. This means it is a fairly high energy density battery. If you go for the entry-level model, you get an LFP battery. This is cheaper to manufacture but has a lower energy density. So this battery is only enough for 51 kWh, with which you can drive about 344 kilometers according to the WLTP measuring method.
The cheaper battery pack can be charged with a maximum of 134 kW. The NMC battery does it 153 kW faster. Still, the 10 to 80 percent time of around 26 minutes remains roughly the same. Because the cheaper battery can simply transport less energy. This is reflected in the starting price of the Volvo EX30
An affordable electric car
The Volvo EX30 is available from 36,795 euros. The long range is available from 41,495 euros, the all-wheel drive costs at least 49,995 euros.
Both the entry-level model and the long range are therefore very competitively priced compared to the competition. This makes the Volvo EX30 a contender for becoming the best-selling car of 2024.
